Semper did mind working out in the fields all day; he liked it. It was something he knew well. And with the apocalypse, farming had become extremely important. In a way he felt as if he actually was doing something to help the people of Mater by growing food for them, but was it really worth it? In the end, would trying to survive really be worth all the hassle of trying to survive? The bodies of the walkers had to decompose at some point... they couldn't last forever. 'But what if their bodies are somehow kept up and running because of the disease?' The thought disturbed him, prompting him to get up off the ground where he had been sitting, in the shade of a dying tree. No one seemed to be doing anything out in the field, so Semper took it as an opportunity to take a walk and cool off.
He raised his hand to wipe it across his brow, but seeing as it was covered in dirt that he had yet to wash off from the day's field work, he decided against it and just let his hands hang down by his sides as he walked. Picking up his shotgun and slinging the strap over his shoulder as he headed down the dusty road toward the town of Mater, despite the situation of the world, Semper felt as though things were still alright. Sure, there were walkers around, but Mater was quite like a safe haven; a little notch of the crazed world that was almost untouched by the disease. Almost. "Almost a matter of time before even Mater fails," he said quietly to himself in German, and as much as he wanted to deny it, he knew it was bound to happen sooner or later. For now, though, he kept his grey eyes looking ahead and focused on making his way toward Mater.

something 'bout you and i
Sofia Roco Gonzalez was as hungry as the next walker on the road feasting on a rotting corpse of a, she couldn't even discern if it was a man or a woman, neither adult or child. The limbs had been cut off, the body mutilated beyond recognition that she turned a blind eye and continued on her humvee. Hitting a bull's eye on her wheels, the head of the walker rolled behind her truck aimlessly, teeth still crunching the meat in its mouth before slowly stopping. Its yellow, unseeing eyes trailed behind the back of the humvee as Sofia drove on the long stretch of road with nothing to see but an endless amount of forest. Maybe a tree bark could suffice for a nice bowl of warm rice and her favorite dish... thinking of which was so not helping her concentrate on the road. The humvee swayed sideways before she got it under control, stopping by a nearby oak.
A few minutes ticked by as she rested her forehead on the headboard, nearly dozing off, when a scrunch of leaf somewhere in front of her vehicle brought her back to alertness. She'd been trained to have light sleeps after all, how else could she have survived all these years. Her hand reached for the machete beside her and she slowly got out of the car, making sure no sound could be heard. Her muscles was tensed as she prepared to attack whatever was coming toward her. Taking cover behind a tree, she peeked sideways and saw a man carrying a shotgun by his shoulder. From the looks of him, compared to her, he looked scaringly at ease, in the woods, alone, with only a shotgun to save him. Now that was definitely a heck load of guts or reckless stupidity for that matter.
She stalked him as he walked on, curious and relieved to see another person alive in days. She wasn't sure if he'd been bitten or not but curiosity got the best of her and instead of just walking into the open and revealing herself, she followed him silently, far enough for him to not see her but close enough for her to track him. She'd been alone for quite some time anyways, interacting with people usually meant hacking and slashing.

As time wore on, Semper came to realize that he had a bad habit of keeping his gaze on the ground instead of up and ahead of him while he walked. At his height, he was used to slouching over so he could talk to people closer to their eye level, and it was a horrible habit. Becoming too focused on the ground and not being aware of his surroundings could mean the death of him. He paused a moment in his walking and looked around him, making sure that he was alone, which he figured he was. There were guards always stationed and ready to take any walkers that dared to stray toward the farms outside of Mater, so it would be rare for one to get through them -- or so he thought.
Adjusting the strap on his shoulder, he continued to head on his way when he felt as though he were being watched; a tingling, itchy feeling on his back. Semper stood up to his full height, becoming very still and aware of his surroundings: the light rustle of the leaves in the breeze, the faint trickle of the creek nearby, the patterns of shadows the moving leaves made on the ground. Nothing out of the ordinary but the burning on his back. He cautiously turned around, still listening as carefully as he could. There was no wheezing of walkers or the sound of uneven and careless strides, so what was it? His grey eyes scanned the forest around him. If it were a walker, he knew it wouldn't have hidden from him; they're not that smart. Moving his hand slowly up the strap of his shotgun, he was ready to swing it off at a moment's notice if need be as he cautiously called out, "Hallo....?"

Sofia wasn't really aware that she was entering guarded territories. Still, none of the rangers, if there were, were making their presence known. Either that or Sofia was doing a pretty good job of remaining hidden, her tunic blending well with the surroundings if she sneaked well enough, and she did. It covered her from head to toe and had been washed last... she couldn't keep count. When she had time, she'd wash and dry her clothes as fast as she could, keeping a weary eye for walkers who'd want to snatch her clothes, but more likely on limbs. Checking the other person's clothing, she was aware of how clean, or as clean as it could ever get, it was. Thank god for a peaceful life out here... maybe she was closer to her destination.
Sofia never noticed it earlier but when the man stood to his full size, she had to admit she was pretty impressed. She was definitely a dwarf compared to his own, and she had a pretty decent height for women. He seemed to have caught the eyes piercing into his back and as he looked around, finally paying more attention to where he was going, she froze in place and crouched closer to the ground. She wasn't ready to reveal herself for reasons unknown. It might be a sense of paranoia, or distrust, or just plain stubborness. He wasn't the first sane person she'd dealt with after all, there'd been others and they'd either backstabbed her or stole a couple of her stuff, even tried killing her in the process. So maybe the paranoia and safety precaution was just right.
Taking a step backward, lost in thought and concentrating hard on keeping herself chamouflaged, she didn't notice the slight inclination of the cliff she was on and the moist that seemed to cover the whole forest. It didn't take a second longer for her to realize that it wasn't her head and hunger messing with her vision. She was literally rolling down the cliff, directed towards the tall man. She tried grasping for roots or trees or anything but the rolling was making her already nauseous head more dizzy and she gave up, letting the laws of physics demonstrate themselves. When the journey down stopped, she lay still and shut her eyes damned tight, not wanting to upset her empty stomach.

The anxiety was starting to get to him. All he was listening for was wheezing -- the worst feeling in the world was being alone and hearing the hoarse, crackling gasping from a walker behind you, wanting nothing more than to eat you. Semper saw nothing in the woods around him, but the tingling was not subsiding. Something was out there, but what?
Semper let the strap of his shotgun slide down his arm so that it was in his hand, ready to be pulled around quickly to shoot anything. Nothing was happening, though. The birds were still singing in the trees and there wasn't an eerie atmosphere, so he hesitantly began to come to the conclusion that nothing was out there when suddenly there was noise. Whatever it was it sounded like it was rolling and thumping the way a large rock would when you rolled it down a hill. He quickly snatched up the shotgun and searched through the sights for the source of the sound, spotting a body hurtling toward him on the ground. Heart racing, his breath caught in his throat as the body -- a girl, by the looks of it -- came to a stop in front of him.
For a moment he stood perfectly still. Surely it wasn't a walker; her body wasn't decomposing or had the grey tint to it that newborn walkers did. You could never be too sure, though, and Semper took great caution in approaching her, keeping the barrel of his gun trained on her. "Are you alright?" He asked tentatively, grey eyes watching her moves carefully.

The world was still spinning and Sofia was sure that if she opened her eyes, the world would spin around her even if she lay still. She felt the contents or emptiness of her stomach churning from the recent trip down the steep slope for a grand entrance. So much for being sneaky. Now her cover was blown and who knew how much time she had left before the guy started snatching her stuff and then shooting her soon after. She couldn't care less though, she was really concentrating hard on getting her thoughts back in motion and the sudden throb of her temples to die down. Concentration wasn't helping though, so instead, she just lay there, waiting for the boy/man's next move. Not eating for days plus the roller coaster ride was enough to counter her years of training in the army. You would've thought she was tougher. She thought she was, but now she wasn't so sure.
If she only had something to digest in her stomach, maybe she could protect herself better. But as it was, she had nothing to get nutrition from but tree bark and dirt, not that she'd try those or...
"Are you alright?" came a voice from somewhere beside her, she heard the sound of his rifle's strap sliding down his arm too. Miniscule details that usually meant life or death.
Sofia almost smiled at the question and would've snapped back with a sarcastic retort but since she wasn't really in the zone of defending herself, she bit her tongue from answering and instead tried to open her eyes. Everything was blurry at first, taking a few seconds for her vision to adjust. There was a rather tall figure towering nearby and she turned her head in that direction, careful not to worsen her nausea.
This close, she was definitely sure of the boy's striking cleanliness despite the utter chaos the world was in. The little hope in her heart grew steadily as she assumed if the boy had the comfort of watching his hygiene, then perhaps, he was a resident of Mater. Not wanting to jump to hasty decisions though, she shut her eyes for a minute.
"Not really," she croaked, clearing her throat after. Reopening her eyes, she noticed the dirt on the boy's hand and wondered if.. but then that would take great effort... yet it really looked like he was... maybe he just recently buried someone. Yeah, that was probably it. Sofia thought, as she tried sitting up, resting her head between her knees. But she was damned hungry, came the first thought and she took her chance. "You wouldn't happen to have some extra food with you, do you?" She asked softly, weakly.
The accent of the boy earlier was not lost to her either.

The girl opened her eyes. They didn't seem dull and lifeless, but rather alert and watchful. Semper didn't move, though; he held his ground and stared down the barrel of his shotgun at her. Aside from her eyes, she was breathing normally, too. No hoarse croaking or gurgling, hissing or snarling. She was human.
He relaxed his grip on the shotgun, lowering it and then slinging it back over his shoulder to a more comfortable position. The blonde boy still stood over her, though, unsure of what to do until she spoke again and sat up, resting her head on her knees. Food? He looked away from her and searched his pockets with his free hand, pulling out a crumpled little paper bag containing peanuts. He wasn't sure how old they were, but it was something so he lightly tossed it to her. "I hope you are not allergic to any kind of nuts. Otherwise, don't open the bag." Semper shifted his weight and positioned himself in a more relaxed stance rather than being poised and ready to shoot.
The girl didn't look any bit familiar. Semper was hardly in Mater as it was, but she didn't look like anyone he had seen in the town. "... you are not from Mater, are you?" He asked, trying to sound curious rather than like he was interrogating her.

The tall blonde was studying her carefully and she returned the deed. Sofia couldn't blame him if he wanted to make sure she wasn't going to feed on his brain as soon as he lowered his guard. The first thing he noticed about him though, this close, she noticed how well the boy looked, not just the physical angles that made up his face but compared to her own eyebags, he looked well and rested. Her hope to have finally hit jackpot on finding the town grew steadily. After months of searching, she was finally close. She just hoped that it was better in the town. From the looks of it, the boy a perfect example, life must be good in the town. She was dying to get there and would do absolutely anything. She could try asking him for directions but what if the town was not accepting survivors anymore. It must've been paranoia or her own doubt but since she'd been living the way she had been these past few days, she couldn't help but suspect the worst and be pessimistic about tomorrow. The fact that expecting too much too sometimes had drawbacks.
Sofia's thoughts were interrrupted when the boy was finally sure she was human by assuming a relaxed post and returning his shotgun on his back. She was thankful when he tossed her a paperbag full of peanuts since she'd basically eat anything edible now, allergic or not. Lucky she wasn't. She didn't miss the fact that he'd easily handed her the bag of peanuts which meant there was more were he'd gotten them from. She could only hope for more confirmation. When she felt eyes burning on her again, she looked up and found the boy studying her again. His questioning soon after was expected. Uncertain of what to answer him, she took a leap and answered honestly. Lying wouldn't get her anywhere and the truth at least had a 50/50 percent chance of working. He'd also spared her his food so that had to account for something.
"No, not really," she managed between chewing in case the boy wanted his food back. She even offered him the bag whilst her mouth was still full. Sofia had to reach further up since he was really tall once you got near him, her distance earlier hadn't given her any leverage to calculate his height. "I've been looking for the town for some quite now... are you a resident of Mater?" Sofia asked, not really in the mood to share her life's story. The peanut in her hands suddenly lost her interest as she gave all her focus on the boy, hoping that her search was finally over.

He didn't very much like hovering over her while she was sitting on the ground. The fact that he had a shotgun on his shoulder didn't lighten up his image any; he felt like a soldier watching over a prisoner. She didn't look like she had experienced a decent day in a while. Semper felt ashamed to think it, but she reminded him of a homeless person. In this new world it wasn't anything new to be homeless since just about every other person was without a safe haven to stay, but he didn't like how he viewed her as such. So instead of standing above her and making himself look superior in any way, so he sat down cross-legged by her, shaking his head "no" when she offered him the bag back. Come to think of it, he hadn't eaten anything since when he had first woke up, but judging by the way she was wolfing down the peanuts, which was meant to be something to eat out in the field, she needed it more than he did.
"I am, yes." Semper answered, settled onto the ground. He doubted he would be there for very long, but it made him feel better to be closer to her eye level. "I live outside of Mater, though. Would you like to go there? To Mater, I mean." He didn't know how well everyone else would take to having a new survivor on the streets, but he really didn't think that anyone would deny her residence. Maybe a few people would since the new discovery of the inmate camp a mile or so outside of Mater, but he didn't think that anyone would kick her out. Everyone was a stranger and homeless at some point, it would be unjust to deny her residence.

Did she notice how tall the boy was? It was like he towered over the trees from where she was looking up at him and Sofia was sure a strain and stiff neck was following soon after. She couldn't be thankful enough, coupled with her gratitude for the peanuts, when he decided he'd sit down beside her. That way, she could look at him easier this time, a little strain and craning necessary. No need to look around her trunk for the lowing numbers of patches she'd stocked up on. In every town she got into, every city, she made sure to stop by the grocery, hospital, clinics, etc. and search for supplies. It was better she was ready all the time. It was surely a ticket to hell everytime she did her little trips but it got her this far and now, she was nearing the end of a chapter, getting into Mater.
It was as if the world stood on a standstill when she heard the boy finally confirm her assumptions and if she weren't such a 'i'm a tough girl, stay back, bitch' kind of woman, she would've cried. Too bad she didn't. It may have helped to let some emotion out but she was dead determined on keeping a strong image. Wouldn't help to crumble into pieces infront of a stranger and let him think you were a lunatic, hence negating all future actions of getting a little direction towards safety. The world started spinning again when she thought she heard him reciting a very bad pick-up line, which he corrected soon after.
"Yes, I'd be happy to go," she smiled, a first real smile in such a long time. "To Mater, that is." She cleared too, in case the wrong signals were sent.
The forest seemed to turn into a place where she could be happy and enjoy the fresh air once more. No kidding, the air really was fresh. It was usually the stench of death hanging around in suffocating amounts. She'd been used to fleeing to the trees to escape hordes and picking them out one by one, nature being one of the most safe hideouts.
"I have a vehicle too if you wouldn't mind us driving," she informed him, feeling her spot on the ground starting to get wet. The forest floors were almost always moist after all, not that she was vain but it was starting to sip into places that were meant to be dry. She vaguely wondered how long the conversation would take. "I don't think leaving it behind with all the explosives would be such a good idea." And in case he got the wrong ideas. "Explosives for protection, nothing more. Sometimes it just gets too tough at times and I have to blast a wall just to escape a swarm coming after me, helps taking out numbers too. Not that I'd ever use on live people..." But then she was rambling and so she stopped, focusing on a little spider crawling on his neck instead.

In a way Semper was relieved that the girl had agreed to go to Mater with him. Perhaps it was because it would mean she would be off the streets with all the walkers running around, but he didn't know. She was safe now, that was for sure. Mater rarely was attacked, but when it was the threats were quickly shot down by the rangers and any able bodied people. She wouldn't have to worry anymore about where her next meal was coming from or if any walkers had found her.
He was startled to hear that she had a vehicle with her, but not just a vehicle: one with explosives. His face quickly fell at the mention of explosives, and even though she quickly clarified what she used them for, the boy was still very wary. "A car? Where did you say you came from? And where did you get the explosives?" He wanted to keep asking her questions, but it would be wrong to simply bombard her with them when they had only just met. "Er... I am alright with riding with you, but I don't think the rangers would take too well to the fact that you have explosives in the car... and doesn't the sound of the car's engine attract walkers?" She had his full, undivided attention, but he quickly began to worry. What if she wasn't telling the truth about the explosives? And a car that's still working, what if she used the explosives to blow up the car in Mater? It would be all his fault, then. He'd be responsible for leading this girl into the only safe haven for miles and miles around, only to have her destroy it. The worry and concern was obvious on his face and in his grey eyes. "I-I mean, you are being truthful about how you use the explosives, ja?" Semper knew it was a stupid question to ask since she could play it off very easily, but he felt he had to. She seemed like a very nice girl and he hated how he was questioning her motives, but he couldn't be too sure.

something 'bout you and i
Sofia couldn't help but notice the sudden wall that shot out of nowhere between them. She could see that the boy was getting nervous by the minute. Honesty was probably good, but too much was sometimes to much to take in. The spider on his neck crept ever so slowly and before she could stop herself, she picked it with her free hand and let it crawl away on the ground. She wasn't going to just kill another life just because it had more than four legs. She'd killed too much and the trauma was definitely coming soon. There were plenty of souls she had to pay for.... lucky enough, she kept a track of the zombies she'd killed. Some with names, others with just physical descriptions. She was a woman of faith after all.
The thing was, when you have all these money amounted in such a short time, you get a headache on what you're supposed to do with it. So, being freshly out of the army, she'd bought herself a humvee, the newest model at this time and personalized it to her own liking. It ran quietly and stealthily, like the humvees she used back in the days when she had to be sneaky. What good would the medic be if she were dead, right? It was good enough to be a car, but to flashy and in the end, she had to stock it someplace for future use. Who knew that future was waiting just around the corner.
"No, it's not really that noisy of a vehicle," she explained, trying to catch his eye to let him know she wasn't lying. Introductions hadn't been given so she might as well have introduced herself to make him know she could be trusted. "My name is Sofia Roco Gonzalez," a hint of spanish started to color her words. She'd been clean on accent this whole time. "I'm from the Bronx and have been travelling for quite some time now," she really hated sharing but she gotta do what she had to. "I was from the army and I had contacts. When you live in a hellish world such as this one, you'd wanna be safe and I kinda ransacked what I could from the contacts I'd known," she'd never worked this hard on someone before. It was usually they trusted her at first glance or they didn't and she'd leave. "Yes, I'm being honest about the bombs, I really don't always use them. There was that one time, and only that time that I had used them," it felt awkward to be sharing this much.
She looked straight into his eyes the whole time, letting him know that she had nothing to hide.
"But if it makes you feel better, lemme just hide my humvee in the woods and we could walk to Mater," she offered, her eyes still hopeful. "That is, if you'd still want to take me." Now that she was done rambling, her brain started to kick its rationale and even if the boy didn't take her, she could still get to town. But getting in would prove a problem if she were a lone ranger. Having someone from the town by her side gave her a better chance of getting into town. Either way, she was not going to give up now. And in case he wanted his peanuts back, Sofia quickly shoved it down her throat and wasted none.

Semper was just about to jump out of his own skin when she suddenly reached out toward him and touched his neck. His mind ran wild with crazy assumptions: what if she had told him too much about her plans that she had to kill him? What if she had a knife hidden on her and she was going to slit his throat? The boy was ready to snatch up his shotgun but the pressure was already off of his neck. His grey eyes quickly lowered their gaze to see her with a spider on her hand, allowing it to crawl off her and onto the ground. 'Calm down, you are overreacting,' he thought, taking a deep breath to ease his strung-out nerves. A hand absentmindedly went up to his neck and rubbed the area she had touched, reassuring himself that she had done nothing.
So her name was Sofia. And her vehicle wasn't as noisy as he thought. He wanted to trust her, but these days it just wasn't the same. One moment you think you have a friend but then, as soon as you turn around, they're stealing everything from your back pockets. She had told him her name, if that meant anything. Maybe she wanted him to trust her. "... Semper Tchida." He said tentatively after some time, taking the time to listen to what she had to say. Everything she said was believable and it explained a lot. "Well," he said, thinking for a few moments, "if you hide the... hum car, whatever it is, then it will only be more suspicious. It would be better to just drive there. I am still willing to take you to Mater; I just think it would be better if you drove."

Sometimes Sofia just didn't know the meaning of personal space. She'd grown to people invading hers all the time so why not return the favor, even to strangers. If she wasn't in her 20s, stunning and charming, most would have probably turned away or gave her one across the face. Lucky enough for her, she had a face that could woo a few hearts; even make some stop on the streets just to give her a good look. It might've been a spider crawling on her newly acquired acquaintance's neck but it didn't mean she could just go around picking spiders off people's necks. There was that other method of communication too like, eg, talking; besides physical interaction. But since it didn't scare him off, how she was easily falling into a habit here, she'd been a people person after all in her late job, she still had a chance to look golden.
Sofia smiled warmly when the other man, Semper, mentioned his name as well. That had to account for something, right? He still looked like he was measuring her trustworthiness and Sofia wasn't certainly going to spoil that now. When the time came for her judgment, she held a breathe as he said he'd still take her, driving or not. Sofia breathed a sigh of relief and almost hugged him. God, when did she become so soft?
"Thank you, you won't regret this, promise," she said, eyes warm. The idea of the explosives in her truck and being checked by the man's people didn't give her some peace though. She couldn't help but plan a way to keep that hidden from the people she'd be meeting. It wasn't like everyday, you'd see someone with a stash of explosives. She knew she wasn't going to use it against anyone alive or misuse it but could she trust the new group of people she was meeting? Surely, she had the right to watch the people's safetiness, didn't she? Could she trust Semper when she told him her plan? Maybe explaining the explosives earlier hadn't been the best idea. "So see, I dunno if coming to your camp with a loadful of explosives is a good idea," she said while standing up, searching the area for a place to keep them temporarily. "And I'd really like to trust you as I would like you to trust me but believe me when I say that maybe hiding the c4s for now would be a good idea. It wouldn't exactly make a trusty image," she followed the trail back to her humvee, hoping Semper would follow her back. "I don't really wanna entrust bombs to people I don't know that much yet. You understand, don't you?" she asked, turning around to face him.

Her smile; was it a true one? Semper couldn't tell. There were too many people who were very good at hiding emotions and manipulating people to think otherwise. He really had no way of knowing if it was a genuine smile, but there was only one way to find out. If it was a lie, he knew he wouldn't be able to live with himself if Mater was blown to smithereens. But questioning people's motives and always believing there to be an ulterior one was rotten. Sofia could very well have good intentions and just want to life in a safe place where she didn't have to constantly watch her back. Semper shook his head to chase away the negative thoughts, not acknowledging that she was still in front of him as he fought with himself internally. 'No, no, you can trust her. All she wants is a safe place to stay. She would not have told you about the explosives if she wanted to blow up Mater.' After a slight nod of the head, he looked up at her with a new found trust. "Alright, I believe you."
"That," he began, standing up slowly to avoid his vision greying out, "is a very good point." They couldn't just waltz into Mater loaded with explosives; otherwise the rangers and sheriffs would take them both down before they could say anything. His grey eyes followed her every move as she spoke, his hand adjusting the shotgun's strap over his shoulder. Sofia began explaining things and walking off, and for a moment Semper hesitated, then thought better of it and followed her. "Well, if you choose to hide them, make sure it is well hidden and yet obvious at the same time so we do not forget where they are. If our rangers find the explosives then we will both be in deep trouble." Semper subconsciously was glad that he was behind her, so if she tried anything funny then he would be able to see it and react quickly. But that was betraying the trust he had developed earlier. He shook his head again, trying to clear his head and think straight. 'Sofia is a friend, not an enemy.' When she turned around to face him, though, he jumped, obviously not expecting it and still a bit on edge with her so close. "I trust you, I really do. I am just still nervous about the explosives, but I trust you." He spoke quicker than he would have liked to, but strung-out nerves kept him on edge.
