member groups.
the first thing someone is asked when they enter mater and are dragged to see the sheriff is this: "what can YOU do for the town?" now, it's not as simple as it seems. a lot of jobs from before the apocalypse are now useless. you can't waltz into town and proudly state that you were the ceo of a cereal company and expect anyone to care. people are sorted based on their more useful talents. and they're sorted into the following groups.
SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT
the sheriff is the one in charge of the town. a sheriff has to be productive and generally well-liked, or else they wouldn't be able to hold their position for long. but the sheriff isn't the only one in this group. there are the trusty deputies, who are the sheriff's right-hand soldiers. and then there are tons of other people who are basically hired guns. they patrol the border and the interior of the town to make sure the zombies stay out, and everyone on the inside plays nice. these people also handle executions. yes, executions. when someone gets bit, it's the department's job to give them a nice, clean death.
MEDICAL PERSONEL
there are a lot of injuries and illnesses in zombieland. obviously certain ones can't be treated, but the medical folk do their best. these are people who were in the medical business before the apocalypse, so they know there stuff. there are also a few people that they've taken under their wing and trained as assistants. after all, they'll need these young folk to be the future healers.
RANGERS
these people are generally thought to be suicidal by the rest of the community. but they're necessary and highly useful. the rangers are the ones that leave mater to get supplies. and with the places nearest mater getting less useful for raids, the rangers are having to travel farther and farther. it's a dangerous game, and many of them come back with bites or don't come back at all. but the town depends on what the rangers bring in. they bring medical supplies, food, and many other things.
SCIENTISTS
they were nerds before the apocalypse, and they're still nerds now. but the scientists are a necessary part of the ecosystem. many are still working tirelessly to find a cure for the zombie plague. others are still just blowing shit up to make pretty colors. but the sheriff's department does everything they can to make sure the scientists have what they need. because hey -- a cure wouldn't be so bad.
TRADESPEOPLE
believe it or not, the farmers are considered some of the most important people in town. the other jobs don't mean a thing if everyone is starving or dying of malnutrition. sure, the rangers bring back tons of food, but none of it is fresh. many of the farmers have to live outside the fenced bit of mater, but they are given people from the sheriff's department to patrol. in addition to the farmers are a number of other jobs. teachers, mechanics, cooks, construction workers, and many more find places within the community.
UNSPECIALIZED
these are the people who don't fall into the above categories. for most, there former jobs are now useless in zombieland, and they haven't yet learned another trade.
