the plot.
It’s 2012 and the world as we knew it is over and done with. Last year an experimental virus was released into New York City when one of the city’s leading experimental research facilities blew up due to a malfunction in one of the labs. The virus was only airborne for moments, but the affects were devastating. Normal, everyday people slowly turned into horrible creatures, only to be described as zombies, feeding off of the flesh and brains of living organisms, mainly humans. Because New York was a major hub for travel, the virus spread all over the world in less than a week.
As the virus spread, the majority of people were either killed or turned into the walking dead. Most were on the their own, but many tried to band together to have strength in numbers. Few of those groups have survive. But Mater, Arizona is still going strong. Then again, it's only about two months old. The population is made up of mostly native residents, but many others have come to call this little town home, since it's the only place around that harbors a large group of people.
Mater has turned out to be something of a perfect location. It’s right on the historic Route 66 highway, where there is a railroad and a nearby stream that feeds into the Verde River. Within the town, there are basic energy supplies. Two of the houses have solar panels, which now supply very minimal energy to the community for some lights at night and other necessities. The town runs off of well water, so they have fresh water for its residents. Currently there is a Sheriff’s department which has taken to protecting the town from the zombie threat, along with some help from residents. The people all needed someone to look to for help, and they appointed a gritty wanderer as their Sheriff.
The people of Mater have come together and started something of a commune, helping each other with whatever is needed. If anyone ventures outside of the walls, they have to have permission from the Sheriff, as well as the protection of one of the deputies. No one comes in or out, without someone or everyone knowing about it. They do accept outsiders, but only after the person/people have been quarantined for two days in a fenced-in area right outside of the town. As for the rest of the world... well, most of them are struggling all on their own. But word of Mater is slowly spreading across the country, and many are now traveling in it's direction.
